AN INTROVERT’S GUIDE TO SOCIAL MEDIA POSTS: 4 GOALS FOR EVERY POST
As an introvert myself, I have to admit that when I first started my business, I did everything possible to avoid social media. I didn’t want to look fake but I also didn’t want to show every single detail of my life to the world.
So what did I do? I defaulted to selling ALL THE TIME. It was more comfortable for me to talk about my services than myself. The thing is, after awhile, my followers began to drop off. My likes went down and fewer people interacted with my post. I’m sure you can guess why.
People don’t want to constantly listen to a sales pitch. I know I don’t!
Nowadays, people want to connect first to the heart of a business before they buy.
We only need to be selling about 20% of the time, so that other 80% needs to be spent on marketing and communicating the heart behind the brand. Marketing includes the value-added posts that support what you sell and are promoting the reasons why people need what you’re selling –– without asking directly for a sale.
If you have been in the shoes of your target audience and know what your audience needs, you will be seen as more reliable and credible. People can connect to your reasons for starting the business, beyond just a desire to make money, which then helps consumers feel better about spending their money.
So let’s get practical! What does this actually look like?
As you are creating your first or next post, ask yourself this simple question:
"Who is this serving and why?".
Once you understand who you are talking to, decide what you want that post to do for your audience.
The goal of a post should be to:
1. Entertain
2. Educate (add value)
3. Encourage
4. Engage
You need to be in 70% of your photos. Your audience is following YOU. They want to see YOUR face and know what you’re up to. Get out from behind the camera!
By the way, your brand is NOT what you sell. The more your audience can see you, and how you’re adding value to people, the more your product or service can naturally weave into it. People don’t want to be sold to, they want to partner with you. This may take you a while you to figure out. That’s okay! Just start. The action will bring clarity.
